Camilleri Wines Reaches out to tourists

Malta Independent Thursday, 27 October 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 22 years ago

An overview on the production of purely Maltese wines, tips on wine-tasting techniques and the actual tasting of different varieties of wines has turned out a great way to end a day’s touring for hundreds of tourists. In fact, throughout the past summer months, over 1,500 tourists have been entertained by Camilleri Wines at the Limestone Heritage site for exclusive wine tasting events in a relaxing and informal environment.

The wine tasting events formed part of special tourist excursions organised by TUI for Dutch, French and Belgian nationals at the Limestone Heritage site, a crafts museum in Siggiewi. The museum, set within a stone quarry proved an unusual and yet very original venue, where tourists were hosted within a traditional Maltese setting to enjoy traditional Maltese products.

“This initiative turned out to be a very original way of treating tourists to something different from the usual tourist destinations by providing them with a true taste of Maltese character,” said Etienne Mallia from Camilleri Wines’ sales and marketing department.

“Besides welcoming this initiative and reacting positively both to the wines and to our actual efforts to promote Malta’s genuine products, many patrons were surprised at what the local wine industry can offer. Comments about the wines were extremely positive and many actually asked us about the possibility for the company to start exporting some of its wines to their respective countries.”

During these weekly events, visiting tourists had the opportunity to taste three varieties from Camilleri Wines’ successful Palatino range namely the Chardonnay, the Merlot and the Cabernet Sauvignon and recently even the popular ZigLand range of wines. The interesting tasting events closed off with a tasting of the Bajtra liqueur from the Zeppi range of liqueurs.
