Vodafone Ranked third in accountability rating 2005 for its corporate responsibility practices

Malta Independent Sunday, 22 January 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Vodafone has been ranked among the top three global companies for putting responsible practices at the heart of their business. The first two companies were BP and Royal Dutch/Shell Group. The Accountability Rating was developed by leading CSR consultancy csrnetwork and international think-tank Account Ability, and launched in 2004. Each year, the rating is applied to the Fortune Global 100®.

Corporate responsibility is about an organisation’s impact on society and the environment. Vodafone challenged itself to become a leader in corporate responsibility by developing its Values and Business Principles in 2002. These define how the company conducts its business and its relationships with stakeholders.

In Malta, Vodafone was the first mobile operator to launch a handset recycling project, where customers can dispose of their old mobile phones, batteries and accessories simply by taking them to any Vodafone retail outlet. Furthermore, in 2003, the company supported the Department of Communications and Computer Engineering at the University of Malta to launch Progett Gardjola, an initiative to inform the general public about radio frequency radiation.

In 2005 Vodafone published six brochures on corporate responsibility for the general public, who may be concerned about certain issues or would like further information about different aspects of mobile telephony. These leaflets include information about mobile phone base stations and health, etiquette, using a mobile phone while driving, the social benefits of mobile, mobile phones and health, as well as new content services on mobiles, which includes practical tips for parents who are concerned about their children using mobile phones.

For more information about Vodafone’s corporate responsibility one can call at Vodafone retail outlets in Birkirkara, Naxxar, Paola, the Embassy Complex in Valletta and Arkadia in Victoria, Gozo. Further information can be obtained by calling Vodafone Customer Service free of charge on 247.
