Gainfully Employed up 1,021

Labour market data for September 2005, provided by the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC), indicate an increase of 91 persons in the labour supply over the same month in the preceding year, the National Statistics Office reported yesterday.

This increase was the result of an increase of 1,021 persons in the gainfully occupied population and a drop of 930 persons on the unemployment register.

Full-time employment

The data indicates that, as from September 2004 to September 2005, the following economic activities within the production sector reported a drop in terms of full-time employment: manufacturing of wearing apparel (-427 persons); manufacturing of footwear (-111 persons); manufacturing of radio, television and communication equipment and apparatus (-106 persons); and, collection, purification and distribution of water (-101 persons).

On the other hand, textile manufacturing reported an increase in employment in the 12 months to September 2005 (+280 persons). On its part, the construction sector reported an increase of 281 persons in employment when compared to the same month in the preceding year.

When it comes to the services sector, as from September 2004 to September 2005, the following economic activities reported an increase in terms of full-time employment: education services (401 persons); wholesale trade (163 persons); the sale, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles and the sale of automotive fuel (143 persons).

On the other hand, a decline in employment occurred in the sector of health and social work (-253).

Part-time employment

With regard to part-time employment, the ETC figures for September 2005 indicate that the total amount of people with a part-time job went up by 2,931 over the same month in the preceding year. This global figure translates into 1,962 persons whose part-time job is their primary occupation and 969 persons whose part-time job is their secondary occupation.

Within the production sector, as from September 2004 to September 2005, the main increases occurred in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+70 persons); publishing, printing and reproduction of recorded media (+48 persons); and construction (+70 persons).

When it comes to the services sector, a growth in part-time employment occurred in the following economic activities: hotels and restaurants (+738 persons); post and telecommunications (+144); and wholesale trade (+366 persons).
