The song Meta jaqa’ d-Dlam has been chosen as the official theme song for World Youth Day 2006.

The winning entry was chosen during a contest a Bay Street and was performed by the FYC Crossbows. The song is written by Mariella Chetcuti with music by Noel Zammit.

Eight-bands took part in the Christian song contest. These were Robert & Leana, Jurgen & Mari, FYC Crossbows, Cornerstone, Chris D’Alfonso and Band, Comunio, Rise and Gen-Z.

Comunio won the award for best lyrics award while Chris D’Alfonso and band received the best interpretation award.

The winning band, FYC Crossbows is made up of Luke Baldacchino on drums; David Baldacchino on bass, Joesph Fenech on acoustic guitar, Noel Zammit on keyboard, with vocalists Vanessa Fenech, Joseph Fenech, Rebecca Bonnici, Mariella Chetcuti, Maria Lombardo and Justin Zammit.

The theme of the winning song, Meta jaqa’ d-Dlam, expands on the theme chosen by Pope Benedict XVI for this year’s World Youth Day which is ‘Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path’ (Psalm 119, 105).

The songs were judged by Andrew Cauchi, Mario Cucciardi and Anthony Micallef.

Each band played two numbers during the concert: one reflecting the verse from the Psalm and the other from the band’s repertoire.

This contest was one of the many activities leading up to World Youth Day which will be celebrated at De La Salle College between 7 and 9 April.

The events are being coordinated by the Diocesan Youth Commmission (KDZ). For more information visit www.kdz.org.mt.
