Nationalist MP Claudette Buttigieg said Tuesday said she will not be contesting the election and is not interested in the PN leadership post.
In a post on Facebook, Buttigieg said she had been approached to contest for the leadership following the resignation last week of Bernard Grech, but she said she is not interested in the post.
"This is a crucial moment for the Nationalist Party, but above all, for the country, which needs a stronger Opposition. I too was approached by several people encouraging me to contest the role of PN Leader, but I made it clear to everyone that I will not be taking that step," she wrote.
"In fact, after thorough discussions with my family, we have made the decision that I will not be contesting the next General Election," she said
"I am announcing this before the names of those interested in the leadership role emerge, because I do not want anyone to interpret this decision as being linked to one particular leader or another," she added.
"Until the next election, I will continue to fulfill my duties as I have always done in Parliament and wherever the party requires me. I remain ready to help where needed, but the time has come to make space for someone else.
"I thank my family and friends for their support, and all those who have always shown confidence in me."
Buttigieg had been elected for the first time in 2013, and has also served as Deputy Speaker.
