Small Change – Big service

Volksbank – first bank in Malta offering exchange of euro coins

Volksbank Malta has just added a small but very useful service to its list of services not offered by any other financial institute at present: the exchange of coins in euro currency.

The new offer works both ways: travellers leaving Malta will now receive the exact equivalent for their Maltese lira in euro instead of having to buy an amount matching the bank notes available in euros. When travelling abroad, Volksbank customers will have the small change in euro coins available.

Managing Director Herbert Skok explained the advantages of the new service: “As soon as the traveller arrives in Frankfurt or Vienna, he will need coins of 1 or 2 euros for the airport trolley. Usually there is no possibility of getting small change as there are no shops in the arrival areas. With this new service, our customers have the small change they need and do not have to carry their luggage because they do not have coins.”

Clients returning from abroad have the option to deposit their remaining euro coins in their accounts or exchange them for Maltese liri. “Returning from abroad, one usually has some 10 or 20 euros left in coins, which are useless because they cannot be changed,” Mr Skok continued. “This is why we are offering this small additional service, which clients will certainly find useful. At the same time, it is also a way of getting used to the euro coins before Malta changes its currency in 2007.”
