HSBC Appoints Sally Robson as new chief operating officer

Malta Independent Tuesday, 28 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Sally Robson has been appointed HSBC Bank Malta’s new chief operating officer. Mrs Robson, who will be taking over from Martin Wilkins, is moving to Malta following five years as area director of the Greater Manchester Area with HSBC Bank plc.

In her previous role in Manchester, Mrs Robson, was responsible for 48 retail branches, six commercial and corporate banking centres and a regulated sales force. Sally also has extensive experience in HSBC’s corporate investment, banking and markets division (CIBM), having occupied the posts of head of financial services sector and joint head of the insurance sector.

“Sally has been with the bank since 1979, when she joined Midland after leaving University. Her track record has been particularly impressive. As area director she transformed Manchester into one of the top performing areas in HSBC in the UK, and we have every confidence that Sally will greatly help develop further HSBC’s business in Malta,” said HSBC Bank Malta’s chief executive Shaun Wallis.

Apart from her work with HSBC, Mrs Robson is also vice-president of the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and Industry – the largest chamber in the UK and a governor of the Withington Girls’ School, one of the UK’s top independent schools for girls. She is also a member of the Greater Manchester Forum, a public – private body working towards improving the economic prosperity of the region in cooperation with the government.

“After a number of years working in the Manchester area, I am very much looking forward to taking up my new role as chief operating officer in Malta. HSBC Bank Malta has a fantastic reputation around the HSBC Group for the quality of its business and for the dedication of its staff and I hope that I too, can contribute to its continuing success in the years ahead,” said Mrs Robson.

Best player

Michael Galea (Birkirkara)

The Stripes top striker – he is also the leading scorer on 19 goals – is my pick this week after his five-star performance against Hibernians on Saturday.

Not only did he score the equaliser and then put his side in the lead just before the interval, albeit from a penalty kick, but he also showed that he is a true leader on the pitch.

Galea was a thorn in the Hibs side, especially in the first half. Had it not been for Muscat’s good saves, Galea might have even scored at least two more goals in that impressive first half, where he was always roaming from one side to the other of the pitch, always in search of an opening or to feed his team-mates with some excellent passes.

On such form, he should be able to lead his side to glory this season.
