Latest figures show that the printing industry in Malta during 2004 generated Lm16 million in local sales, Lm32 million in exports, and invested Lm5.5 million in plant and equipment while employing an average 1,627 people who earned total wages of Lm11.5 million. These figures clearly highlight the importance of this industry in Malta and are the reason why HSBC has agreed to sponsor the Malta Printing Industry Association which represents the industry’s interests and keeps members up to date on all the latest developments both in Malta and internationally.

“Probably few people know that the printing industry accounts for 2.61 per cent of Malta’s Gross Domestic Product, making it a significant contributor to the nation’s economic well-being. As with all types of businesses, this industry faces stiff international competition as well as a changing regulatory environment.

There is a lot to keep up with and the Malta Printing Industry Association plays a crucial role in representing the industry’s interests. It is out of recognition for the work carried out by the association and the importance of the industry in Malta that HSBC has decided to sponsor the association and help it further strengthen its operations,” said HSBC’s head of personal financial services, Mr Godfrey Swain.

The Malta Printing Industry Association is based at KBIC Centre in Paola and currently has 74 members. The association was set up following a detailed study conducted by the Institute for the Promotion of Small Enterprise Limited (IPSE), which is now part of Malta Enterprise. The main objective of the association is to enhance the sector’s competitiveness. It also aims to keep members informed about international developments and help identify potential export markets. The association also acts as a lobby group as well as aiming to formulate and implement a code of standards and ethics for its members.
