Malta Independent Monday, 15 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Bank of Valletta is supporting the initiatives being undertaken by the Millennium Chapel and WOW (Wishing Others Well) Centre in Paceville.

The Millennium Chapel is essentially a place of quiet prayer in the centre of one of Malta’s most sought after entertainment areas. The WOW Centre inaugurated in 2004, is a communication and meeting place that welcomes groups of people visiting the Millennium Chapel. It is also a place where people in need of help and counselling can find assistance.

Mario Formosa, manager of Bank of Valletta’s Branch in St Julian’s, presented the bank’s sponsorship to Anne Grech, member of the foundation and Public Relations Officer. Also present was Fr Hilary Tagliaferro, the Director of the chapel and the centre and who is one of the main drivers behind the Millennium Chapel project.

Presenting the sponsorship, Mr Formosa congratulated the Augustinian priests and lay people who run the chapel for the most worthy community work they are undertaking within the Maltese society. “Bank of Valletta is proud to support this initiative which is fulfilling an important social role within the Paceville area,” said Mr. Formosa. “Our support, which forms part of the social initiatives being undertaken under our Community Programme for 2006, is directed at supporting the valid social work being undertaken by the WOW Centre,” concluded Mr. Formosa.

Fr Hilary thanked the bank for its support. He said that it is only through the generosity of benefactors that the Millennium Chapel and WOW Centre can keep on providing the support they offer to those who seek their help and assistance. Fr Hilary said, “When we were planning the Millennium Chapel, our objective was to create an oasis of peace in the Paceville area. Today, our centre is fulfilling an important social role through the provision of crisis intervention services and counselling for individuals experiencing different kinds of problems. We also operate a first aid clinic.

“Everyday, during our opening hours, from 9am till 2am, we experience a constant trickle of young people, including foreigners, coming here to spend some time in silence or to talk about their problems. This shows that we are reaching the objectives that we had set out to achieve,” concluded Fr Hilary.
