Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries Francis Agius yesterday paid a visit to one of the largest rabbit farms currently in operation in Malta. He revealed that in a short period of time, the abattoir will be brought into line according to EU standards and that Malta registers the highest amount of persons who consume rabbit meat in the world.

Dr Agius said that there are currently 7500 rabbits for production in Malta with every person in Malta eating around 10 kg of rabbit meat annually.

He said that EU aid for marketing and processing of agricultural products totalled E4.2 million between 2004 and 2006, while the total amount that could come our way for the whole sector could be more than E20 million.
