A Libyan man was yesterday conditionally discharged for a year after he admitted to threatening police while he was drunk as he celebrated the end of his exams.
Mabrouk Meftah Egliwan, 28, admitted to threatening the officers and damaging the uniform of a police constable when he pulled him from the shirt.
Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna heard how the incident took place in St Julian’s early on Sunday morning when a group of students were celebrating the end of their exams.
The court heard how a police car drove past and when the police saw that the students were about to leave a mess of bottles, the officers approached them and told them to clear the mess and to stop being loud. At that point, Egliwan grabbed a policeman by the shirt.
In court yesterday, Egliwan paid the Lm15 damage to the policeman’s shirt. Magistrate Apap Bologna conditionally discharged him for a year.
Police Inspectors Martin Sammut and Carmelo Abdilla prosecuted while Dr Leon Bencini appeared for the student.
