Labour Leader meets MAM

Malta Independent Thursday, 1 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Labour leader Dr Alfred Sant yesterday said the government and health professionals had to work together to find solutions to the problems in the sector.

A delegation from the Malta Medical Association yesterday had a meeting with the Labour Party during which they discussed the situation in the health sector and the Labour Party’s draft plan on health.

Dr Sant said the main problems in the sector were lengthy waiting lists for treatment, the lack of medicines on the market and their cost and the management of the new hospital in Tal-Qroqq.

The opposition leader said a Labour government had no intention of introducing some services in the health sector against payment.

The Labour Party said that Dr Stephen Fava, president of MAM, stated that the main concern for the association was the fact that many Maltese doctors were finding employment overseas, especially in the UK, and this will cause serious problems in the future.

Dr Fava said the Labour Party’s invitation to meet the MAM was a positive signs and they both agreed that expenditure in the sector was not a cost but an investment.
