Court: Jail For inmate who committed a crime a week after leaving prison

Malta Independent Friday, 2 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

A 20-year-old was yesterday sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for stealing a laptop and cash from St John’s co-Cathedral merely a week after he was released from prison.

Daniel Lanzon, from Cospicua, had pleaded guilty to stealing a laptop and an amount of cash from St John’s co-Cathedral on 10 May 2006.

The court, presided over by Magistrate Giovanni Grixti, took into account that the accused had filed an early guilty plea, as well as the fact that he had returned the stolen items to the owners.

However, he also looked at the accused’s tarnished record and pointed out that he committed the theft merely one week after having been released from the Corradino Correctional Facility after serving a two-year jail term.

Police inspector Michael Mallia prosecuted.
