Yesterday, Malta Freeport welcomed the 9,500 TEU CMA CGM Medea, which is on its maiden voyage. It is the largest containership ever to call at Malta Freeport. This is also the French shipping line’s largest vessel in its fleet.
CMA CGM Medea, which berthed at the North Quay of Terminal Two has a stacking profile of 17 containers across, a deadweight tonnage of 117,800 tons, a service speed of 24.1 knots and 700 FEU reefer points. The length overall is 350 metres, the width 42.8 metres and its draft is 14.5 metres. It was built at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries.
The containerisation industry is continuously posing new challenges that Malta Freeport is meeting with confidence, a Freeport statement said.
The trend for larger containerships is clearly not set to change as all the major shipping lines have vessels with this configuration on order. Indeed, the present developments being undertaken by the Freeport in its equipment and infrastructure will place it in an optimum position to continue offering the shipping lines calling at its facilities maximum efficiency and flexibility in the handling of their vessels for many years to come.
Moreover, in line with these developments, the port has also been constantly improving its performance level to match the latest needs of the industry.
