Germany is the second EU member state to help with Malta’s complex irregular immigration problem.
This initiative is a result of close collaboration between the Justice and Home Affairs Ministry and the Foreign Affairs Ministry and German authorities.
German officials from the Federal Office of Immigration visited Malta last month to help the Maltese government with the process of transferring people with humanitarian and refugee status to Germany, according to a government statement.
This cooperation is the result of a request for help with the problem of asylum seekers made by Malta to EU member states last July.
Bilateral cooperation is of great importance to Malta due to the constant stream of immigrants landing on Malta’s shores, the statement added. The EU’s smallest member state cannot carry the burden of such a complex problem and needs the help of other EU member states.
The Maltese government is grateful to Germany, that has followed in Holland’s footsteps, and hopes that other countries will also offer assistance, the statement concluded.
