Tourism and Culture Minister Francis Zammit Dimech yesterday announced the staging of a spectacular musical LesMisSaigonGuerre by The Helping Hands Group, on 15 July at 8pm.

World renowned composer Claude-Michel Schönberg will be the special guest, travelling to Malta specifically to see his music come to life at the Mediterranean Conference Centre.

LesMisSaigonGuerre is taken from Schönberg and Boublil’s Masterpieces, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon and Martin Guerre. It celebrates Helping Hands Group’s 10th anniversary of annual musicals.

The Helping Hands Group is a non-profit organisation of teachers/students and ex-students from MA Refalo Post Secondary School Victoria Gozo. Each year, the Group has successfully staged musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar (1997) Les Miserables (Highlights – 1998) Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1999 & 2003) The Best of Musicals (2001) The Scarlet Pimpernel (Malta Premiere 2004) and A Night with the Musicals (2005).

The 70-strong National Orchestra will be directed by Mro Joseph Grech. It will be accompanied by a 100-strong chorus including the established singers from St Monica Choir and The Helping Hands Group. The cast includes many well-known singers.

Rights have been granted from Cameron Mackintosh Company Ltd, Alan Boublil Overseas Ltd and PRS, for this extraordinary production in Malta. Authentic West End London Orchestra Arrangements have also been hired for the concert.

All profits will go to Id-Dar tal-Providenza.

Leading companies have lined up to support this event, namely: Hilton Malta, Air Malta, Malta Tourism Authority, Bank of Valletta, melita digital and Marsovin. Without such support this event would be an impossible feat.

Dr Zammit Dimech said that the collaboration between the Helping Hands Group, the National Orchestra and a choir made up of 100 persons made the presentation of this musical in aid of the Dar tal-Providenza possible. He said that everybody knows the significant funding needed to run this institution.

“The Maltese people are being given the opportunity to follow this spectacular production while also being given the opportunity to contribute towards a just cause. The Helping Hands Group is a voluntary group which for the past ten years successfully produced musicals that brought out not only the teachers’ and students’ talents but also the talents of musicians and singers. This group was also successful in bringing together all this talent, thus offering the Maltese people full scale productions of the best quality,” said Minister Zammit Dimech.
