Crackers: Father’s Day

Malta Independent Thursday, 15 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Happy Father’s Day

A Dad is a person

who is loving and kind,

And often he knows

what you have on your mind.

He’s someone who listens,

suggests, and defends.

A dad can be one

of your very best friends!

He’s proud of your triumphs,

but when things go wrong,

A dad can be patient

and helpful and strong

In all that you do,

a dad’s love plays a part.

There’s always a place for him

deep in your heart.

And each year that passes,

you’re even more glad,

More grateful and proud

just to call him your dad!

Thank you, Dad...

Father’s Day is celebrated next Sunday 18 June. Father’s Day was created around the same time as Mother’s Day in the early 1900s.

Mrs Sonora B. Dodd first proposed Father’s Day in 1909. She wanted to designate a day to honour her father, William Smart, because he raised six children as a single parent and gained her utmost respect. She organised the first Father’s Day celebration on 19 June 1910 in Spokane, Washington.

The idea caught on around the nation and by 1924, even President Calvin Coolidge announced his support for the holiday. In 1966 President Lynden Johnson signed a proclamation stating that the third Sunday of each June would officially be Father’s Day. But it wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon finally designated Father’s Day a national holiday. Today it is a holiday to honour not just paternal, but all influential father figures in our world.
