Police chief ‘categorically and unequivocally denies’ allegations made by Aquilina

Monday, 12 May 2025, 16:45 Last update: about 2 days ago

Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa has denied the allegations made by Robert Aquilina, Fondazione Falcone's representative in Malta.

Aquilina had accused Gafà of undermining the criminal inquiry into Malta's controversial hospitals deal.

The Commissioner was asked to respond to the allegations made in Aquilina's post. He was also asked why the police didn't conduct any interrogations on the persons the magistrate had indicated, and whether the Commissioner or anyone else gave instructions for interrogations not to be carried out.

Responding, a spokesperson for the Police Force said that "Whilst the Police Commissioner categorically and unequivocally denies the allegations made by Dr Robert Aquilina, it must be pointed out that there were immediate criminal proceedings in Court, led by the Office of the Attorney General with the assistance of the Police."

"In light of this, and in the interest of not prejudicing these sensitive and active processes, it would not be appropriate to comment in detail at this stage. It is worth underlining that the respective Magisterial Inquiry was thorough and extensive, spanning over four and a half years. The conclusions reached by the Inquiring Magistrate were clear and are being acted upon through the appropriate legal channels."

"The Malta Police Force remains fully committed to upholding the rule of law, ensuring accountability, and conducting all investigations independently, professionally, and without external influence."
