Bank of Valletta, in collaboration with the Federation of Industry and the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association, has organised a series of
informative seminars focusing on a number of key issues related to the environment. The topics discussed included the disposal of liquid waste, water recycling and drainage, potentially hazardous waste and ozone depleting substances, and packaging waste.
Dr Simone Borg, lecturer and legal consultant specialising in environmental law, coordinated and addressed the seminars.
“Education in environmental law is an extensive subject,” said Dr Borg, “and Bank of Valletta’s initiative to host these educational seminars shows that the bank is supportive towards the Maltese environment.
“This series of seminars, directed at promoting environmental awareness and education, has a longer term view when compared with other activities where one normally obtains an immediate tangible result,” she added.
“Educating the operators in industry on the importance of safeguarding the environment and, specifically, on the legislation that is in place, constitutes an excellent investment in ensuring that the quality of the environment can be sustained. Education is the basis of everything and helps to encourage people to contribute towards a healthier environment and consequently, towards a better quality of life,” Dr Borg concluded.
Together with Dr Borg, a number of technical speakers delivered presentations on how the industry can put environmental laws into practice and the advantages that may be enjoyed in the process. The presentations not only provided interesting legal tips but also gave technical insights from first hand experience gained in industry.
Commenting about this initiative, Bank of Valletta head of PR, Communications and Corporate Branding Michael Galea said: “We have organised this series of seminars as one of the initiatives we are taking under the Environment Pillar of our Community Programme for this year. We are confident that all those who have participated have benefited from the valuable insights that were shared during these events.
“The seminars have also helped give a comprehensive picture of the legal requirements that have to be followed under each of the environmental areas discussed,” he concluded.
