The Armed Forces of Malta Third Regiment organised an inter-company athletics meeting earlier this month.
The companies that took part were Headquarters Company, Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Squadron (better known as EME Sqn), Engineers Squadron, Ammunition & Explosives Company (which also includes the Explosives Ordnance Disposal Troop), Revenue Security Corps (RSC), the Armed Forces of Malta Band and Training Wing.
Ten events were contested as follows: 100m, 100m Over 40 years, 800m, 3 km cross-country, 4 x 400m, shot put, javelin throw, long jump, 60m Sack-race and Tug-of-War.
The outright winners in the end were EME Squadron who made a good showing throughout. The Training Wing came second, and the Engineer Squadron clinched third place.
The 3 Regiment Commanding Officer Lt Colonel G. DeGaetano commended the participants on their performance and excellent team spirit, adding that sport in the military was indispensable, as it encouraged such important elements as discipline, teamwork, and fitness.
AFM commander Brigadier Carmel Vassallo stressed the importance of sport and the need for Army personnel to portray a good image and remain fit and ready.
The commander then presented medals to the first three individuals or teams in each event. Trophies were awarded to the first three companies and the challenge shield was presented to the winning company.
