Every year, both in Malta and Gozo, the British Legion organises English Language courses during the summer months.
What makes these courses different and special is the fact that students do not have to face the tension of sitting for exams at the end. Instead, there is a weekly assessment, which helps both to reduce tension and also helps students to feel they are progressing their knowledge of English. Also, while schools give prizes only to the best students, regardless of effort and improvement put in, at the British Legion all students will have the satisfaction of obtaining a certificate (of attendance, pass, merit or distinction). Thus, all students will feel they are being rewarded for having put in so much effort each week during the summer. Not only, but to further feel they have been rewarded for participating and putting in an effort, each and every student is also given a book prize. In this way the British Legion is also promoting reading among students.
Reading is further encouraged since students have a chance to win more books by participating in activities sponsored by the British Airways. Another point that can be mentioned is that students are encouraged to use tools in learning English, including the use of the dictionary that helps them to become more independent, more secure in their writing and capable of self help.
Finally, for students to feel more confident, the courses are structured in such a way that each week, although students learn new things they also have exercises that serve as revision of what they had already learnt at their respective schools. This balance of revision and learning new things make these courses ideal for both students who are good in English as well as for those who need to improve.
In Malta, courses are being organised for students starting Year 2 until Form 5 while in Gozo there are courses for students starting Year 1 until Form 5.
