Malta Independent Thursday, 29 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Bank of Valletta inaugurated the 15th in its series of retrospective exhibitions featuring works by artist Luciano Micallef. The exhibition, with a total of 65 works exhibited, is the first one being hosted at the new BOV Centre in Santa Venera.

The exhibition was officially inaugurated by President Edward Fenech Adami. The president had words of praise towards the artist and his artistic achievements, both locally and internationally, and for playing an important role in defining the development of Malta’s art in modern times.

Addressing the guests during the inauguration ceremony, chairman of Bank of Valletta, Roderick Chalmers, said: “Luciano Micallef is widely considered as one of the foremost products of his generation in Malta’s artistic scene, and we are delighted to host an exhibition of his works. This exhibition, the fifteenth in a series of bi-annual retrospective exhibitions organised by Bank of Valletta, will provide an opportunity to both our customers and the public at large to appreciate the artist’s prodigious and versatile talent.”

Mr Chalmers also spoke about BOV’s Community Programme with an investment of Lm240,000 in community initiatives for the current financial year. “At Bank of Valletta we are committed to playing an active role within the communities in which we operate. We are resolute in fulfilling our corporate social responsibility and we consider BOV’s Community Programme, launched earlier during the current financial year, to be an important tool in enabling our organisation to reach this objective”, said Mr. Chalmers.

BOV’s chairman added that, “the promotion of arts and culture in Malta, and support towards local artistic talent, feature as an important pillar within our Community Programme, which also gives importance to other areas that we consider to be worthy of BOV’s support. Today, Bank of Valletta has established a solid reputation as the leading patron of the arts and culture in Malta and Gozo, and it is our intention to continue our programme of support and encouragement. We hope that this exhibition featuring works by Luciano Micallef will help widen the appreciation of the vast artistic talent that our country has the good fortune to be able to offer,” concluded Mr Chalmers.

Commenting about the exhibition, Luciano Micallef said: “I am very pleased and satisfied with the way this exhibition has come together following months of hard work. The new BOV Centre offers plenty of volume and natural light and these are the ideal qualities that any artist would require for the successful set-up and presentation of his exhibition. I am very satisfied with the way I was professionally assisted throughout the whole mounting process of the works and I am also grateful to all those involved who understood and fully supported my requirements.”

The exhibition will be open for the public from till 11 August. As in previous retrospective exhibitions, this show will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue that includes the artist’s biography, a critical synopsis on his works and a reproduction of all the exhibits featuring within the exhibition.
