Government Has lack of vision in energy sector – AD

Malta Independent Thursday, 29 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Alternattiva Demokratika is surprised that after so much rhetoric by the Prime Minister about the need to invest in alternative energy sources, on the first occasion in which the government had a chance to prove that it is passing from words to action in the recent announcement of a Lm100 million investment by Enemalta, no mention is made of alternative sources of energy.

Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party (AD) spokesperson on energy, industry and IT Ralph Cassar said: “It is indeed amazing that Minister Austin Gatt did not even mention renewable sources of energy.”

AD chairperson Dr Harry Vassallo said: “AD will continue bringing to the attention of the public and EU institutions Malta’s power plants lack of compliance with EU directives which are designed to protect people’s health.”

Dr Vassallo invited the Maltese and Gozitan public to visit AD’s website www.alternattiva.org.mt from where they can send an email to EU Commissioner for the Environment Mr Stavros Dimas regarding the state of Malta’s power plants. Dr Vassallo emphasised: “It is in the public’s interest to bring these facts to the EU’s attention because the majority of people voted in favour of EU accession to improve their quality of life and not to spite or favour a particular political party.”
