Malta Independent Saturday, 8 July 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

During the month of July, Vince Briffa (pictured right) will be showing two video and installation works in Konstanz, Germany and Feldkirch in Austria.

As part of its summer series of exhibitions on the theme of Human Implementation, the Galerie der Schwarze Punkt in Konstanz, Germany will be showing Hermes, a video, audio and soil installation that was also shown in the Venice Biennale of 1999 and at the St James Cavalier’s inaugural exhibition in 2000. The work will occupy the main gallery, while other related works by the artist will be shown in the annex to the same gallery. This exhibition succeeds Austin Camilleri’s video installation Deposition shown last month in the same gallery. Hermes opens on 14 July and remains open until 4 August.

Body of Glass – After Caravaggio is a multiple video, audio and water installation that will be shown at the Johanniterkirche in Feldkirch, Austria between 28 July and the middle of November. This is the second time that the artist has been invited by curator Ms Jacob to put up a seminal work in this prestigious cathedral. The first work shown by Mr Briffa was Amen – Nemmen in 2002. Vince Briffa’s installation at the Johanniterkirche succeeds work by well-known international contemporary artists such as Anish Kapoor (2003), Jenny Holzer (2004) and Michael Craig-Martin (2006).

At the moment Mr Briffa is also showing a multiple video, audio, text and mirror installation entitled Alternative Journeys at Fort St Angelo as part of Crossings, an exhibition of European contemporary art supported by Culture 2000 and curated by Yiannis Toumazis and Androula Michael. The Crossings project is led by the Pierides Foundation of Cyprus and coordinated by the Foundation of the Hellenic World, Greece, the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, Malta, the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche of Rome and the Centre de Recherches en Arts, Images et Formes, Université de Picardie Jules Verne, France. Later on this year the show, which also includes work by local artist Pierre Portelli, will move to Amiens in France and the Kolossi Castle in Cyprus.
