Extended Visiting hours at Archaeology Museum

Malta Independent Tuesday, 11 July 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Heritage Malta’s National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta will be extending its opening hours till 7pm until the end of September.

This initiative was originally aimed for the month of June but since the possibility to visit the museum during the evening cooler hours was welcomed well by visitors, the agency decided to prolong it for the whole summer season. After this extended trial period, the agency will once again review the initiative. The museum’s shop will also remain open till 7pm. Admission fees remain the same. In addition, on 28 July and 4, 11 and 18 August, on the occasion of the events organised by the Valletta Alive Foundation, the museum will allow admissions up until 8pm, and will close at 8.30pm. On these days, the entrance fee between 6.30pm and 8pm will be reduced to half price.

The National Museum of Archaeology displays an exceptional array of artefacts from Malta’s unique prehistoric periods, starting with the first arrival of man in the Ghar Dalam phase (5200 BC) and running up to the Tarxien phase (2500 BC). The collection is housed in the Auberge de Provence, one of the first and most important buildings to be erected in Malta’s baroque capital city, Valletta, after the Great Siege of the late 16th century. Works are currently being undertaken to extend the museum’s permanent exhibition to the upper floors.
