The Greens have pledged their support to the organisers of the national protest to be held tomorrow in Valletta against the proposed extensions to the planning boundaries.
“The vast majority of the Maltese are opposed to the continued and completely unnecessary destruction of the countryside.” chairman of Alternattiva Demokratika Dr Harry Vassallo said yesterday. “The government is fully aware of this and its obstinate persistence against all reason is alarming in itself,” he added.
“The country is being told that the government holds power, all the power in the land and that it can do what it likes when it likes. Ordinary citizens are being told that they are powerless,” Dr Vassallo said.
AD’s chairman said the Greens will be in Valletta tomorrow “because what is being organised is a truly national protest”.
“This will be our last chance to invite parliament to reject the government’s proposal. Our children and our children’s children will ask us where we were when this folly was committed, whether we had the courage of our commitment, whether we exercised our right to protest.’ Dr Vassallo said.
He said that if parliament approved this illegality, it would still have no effect at law but it would involve thousands of people in litigation for many years to come. We are still in time to spare us all this waste of energies and expense. We are still in time to make our voice heard before it is too late to avoid the consequences,” Dr Vassallo said.
