Malta Labour Party’s (MLP) foreign affairs and information technology spokesman Leo Brincat, in his capacity as Council of Europe’s rapporteur for Lebanon, has written to the president of the parliamentary assembly of the council Rene Van Der Linden with regard to the situation in Lebanon.
Mr Brincat said that all political forces in the country had expressed their will to further strengthen their collaboration with the council during a fact-finding mission he conducted on behalf of the council in Lebanon last month.
He appealed to the presidency of the council “to resort to any formal and/or informal diplomatic means as well as to publicly express its concern about the evolving situation while calling for an immediate ceasefire”.
Mr Brincat said he felt encouraged by Lebanese Premier Fouad Siniora’s statement released last Saturday. Mr Siniora said that his government would reassert government authority over Lebanese territory in order to secure the implementation of the UN resolution 1559.
Mr Brincat promised that he will continue to monitor the situation in the territory and looked forward to reporting his findings during a meeting that will be held shortly in Turkey.
