Malta has established formal diplomatic relations with Montenegro, through a protocol which was signed in Vienna yesterday by ambassadors Walter Balzan and Veska Garcevic.

Malta was among the first European countries to extend its recognition to Montenegro as a sovereign independent state following its declaration of independence from Serbia in June.

Foreign Minister Michael Frendo augured success and prosperity to the people of Montenegro and said that he is looking forward to close cooperation between Malta and the new Mediterranean state, for the benefit of both countries and the region.
