The re-surfacing of a rural road through Wied il-Luq, that links Siggiewi and Girgenti to Rabat, undertaken by the Malta Transport Authority, is expected to be completed today, The Malta Independent has learnt.
Sources close to the Roads and Urban Development Ministry told this newspaper that the decision to surface this road with a two-inch layer of asphalt was taken after patching work was not meeting the architects’ expectations and was only lasting a few months.
Moreover, this road, although rural, also serves as a relief road for arterial roads in the area and for the number of farmers who own land in the area.
The project, which cost around Lm50,000, began last week and is expected to be completed by today. The contractors responsible for the project were Bonnici Brothers and the stretch re-surfaced is around 2.3 kilometres long.
Meanwhile a spokesman for the Ministry said this is part of a wider effort to upgrade the entire rural road network linking Siggiewi, Zebbug and Rabat. The rest of the road leading to Rabat will be re-surfaced at a later date.
The sources said the ADT has also issued a tender for the surfacing of the road along Chadwick Lakes. Work on this project is expected to start in the coming months.
