CETFREE has written to the police and the Veterinary Services Department to express concern about the situation of the marine mammals kept at the local dolphinarium.
In a statement, the animal rights NGO said that despite various attempts to highlight the issue in the past few years it was dismayed to note that the animals were still being subjected to a stressful environment and harassment, especially in view of the loud noise levels on site both during shows for the public and also during parties and other events held adjacent to the park.
“The upcoming concert to be held at Splash and Fun today is yet another detrimental activity and for which CETFREE believes no permit should be issued considering the vicinity of the site to the captive marine mammals which have no means to escape the noise,” the NGO said.
It asked if any measures had been taken to ensure the well-being of these animals and what investments had been made for their welfare.
“The European Association for Aquatic Mammals, of which Mediterraneo Marine Park is a member, states that measures should be taken to protect dolphins from excessive noise as this can cause severe stress to the animals themselves,” it said.
CETFREE said it was continuing its summer campaign to create awareness of the issue, especially among young students who are attending Skolasajf activities.
