Air Malta participated in the 17th Premio Top Sprint – Omaggio alla Sicilianita, the annual event that rewards Sicilian personalities who have promoted Sicilian culture in some way, or who have distinguished themselves in their profession. For the last 13 years, Air Malta has participated in this event.
The awards were presented at a gala evening, that included music and cabaret performances, held at the prestigious Teatro Metropolitan of Catania on 8 December. This year’s honours were presented to Vanessa Ferrari (sport), Giovanni Minoli (journalism), I Pooh (music) and Claudia Gerini (show business).
This year, the show was presented by former Miss Italia Mirca Viola, who also stars in CentroVetrine. Celebrity guests included Federico Zampagliene (lead singer of Tiro Mancino) and Fabrizio Fontana (James Tond in the TV show Zelig). The Siciliani Nel Mondo’ prize was presented during the gala evening to Domenico Scaglione, who was born in Partinico and emigrated to New York, where he has achieved high regard and respect in the economic sector.
This year, Air Malta’s commitment to promote Maltese talent overseas led to popular singer and dancer J. Anvil performing during the event.
In previous years, the Top Spring awards have seen performances from Julie and Ludwig, Ira Losco, Fabrizio Faniello, Olivia Lewis, Charlene and Natasha, Leontine, Mike Spiteri, Claudette Pace, Lawrence Gray, Ali and Lis, and Mark Tonna.
Over the years the show has presented awards to various personalities and associations including Air Malta, Ezio Greggio, Jerry Cala’, Pippo Baudo, Emilio Fede, Michele Cucuzza, Ficarra & Picone, Carlo Verdone, Vincenzo Modica, Toto’ Antibo, Giucas Casella, Manlio Dovi, Gianni Bella, Anna Valle, Maria Grazia Cucinotta, Leo Gullotta, Nino Frassica, Franco Zeffirelli, Damiano Damiani, Carmen Consoli, Gerardina Trovato, Ornella Muti and Manuela Arcuri.
In 1995, Air Malta was presented with the Top Sprint award for “…its fundamental role in cementing the economic links between the two islands.”
The whole show was transmitted last Saturday by Antenna Sicilia, the main Sicilian TV station. The event was also given ample coverage in La Sicilia, a prominent Sicilian daily newspaper.
Air Malta believes that, through its association with Top Sprint, the airline is reaffirming its commitment to promote Malta overseas, especially in Italy, which is one of the most important markets for the airline.
