What is Weightlifting

Weightlifting is a sport for the strongest of men and women, but any athlete can take up weightlifting to help their performance.

The chief component of weightlifting is the barbell, a steel rod to which plates of different weights, usually made of iron covered with durable rubber, are attached by means of collars. Find out more about this sport, practiced in Malta, in this feature produced by University communication students Bernard Borg and Glen Galea.

Feature event

The 5th MOC Sports Awards – the premier event for recognising sporting excellence – took place on 12 December.

These awards are not just about acknowledging past greatness, but also, and more fundamentally, are an investment in our athletes and for the furtherance of sport in Malta.

Over 50 athletes, coming from a wide selection of the sports practiced in Malta – including bocci, horse racing, judo, lawn bowls, pool, sailing, shooting, table football, table tennis, tennis, tenpin bowling and triathlon – received an award.

Find out who received a prestigious Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze award in recognition of their outstanding sporting achievement in 2006.

At this same event, the MOC also ensures that local sporting legends are duly recognised. Find out who was elected to the MOC Hall of Fame.

Highlights

This week’s highlights will focus on the Community Chest Fund Motor Sport fun race organised by the Motor Sport Association, the Judo National Championships and a Baseball tournament organised by the Malta Baseball/Softball Associa-tion.

The weekly schedule is available on www.nocmalta.org and in The Malta Independent newspaper every Tuesday.
