Over 1,067 tonnes of paper and 629 tonnes of glass have been collected in bring-in sites situated in Malta and Gozo this year, according to WasteServ.

Furthermore, another 180 tonnes of cans and 350 tonnes of plastic were collected.

During the past few weeks, WasteServ has been introducing bring-in sites in more localities in the hope that more people will be encouraged to separate their waste.

The bring-in sites are co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

Sources at WasteServ explained that they are increasing the number of bring-in sites to minimise the problem of overflowing bins.

“We are very happy with the response we have received so far and the large majority of the waste placed in the bins is clean,” they explained.

However, they pointed out, if someone dumps a mattress outside the skips it might discourage other people from using the skips.

In fact, they explained, only clean and dry waste should be disposed of at the bring-in sites.

Furthermore, no waste should be left outside the containers and any form of bulky waste is not appropriate for these sites.

WasteServ will continue its information campaign to guide people on how to use the waste separation bins at the bring-in sites.

WasteServ trainees have visited over 20,000 households to inform them about waste management and the proper use of bring-in sites.
