Razzett tal-Hbiberija has complimented its programmes within the physical disability services with its first successful bid for EU funds. The first EU co-funded state-of-the-art assistive technology ICT training programme will provide specialised assessment and training services, supported by the Vodafone Malta Foundation and Forestals Group of Companies.

During the previous year, explained CEO Nathan Farrugia, “Razzett tal-Hbiberija has set up and developed a separate physical disability services programme, run by qualified therapists and experienced staff, that aims to improve the independence and quality of life of people with physical disability.”

The programmes are open to people with physical impairment free of charge, and aim to bridge the gap between disability and full ICT (Information and Computer Technology) use.

Both the equipment and the design of the lab form part of an ambitious and pioneering programme that aims to facilitate equal opportunities for employment, education and social inclusion.

The opening was held on 29 December, just before the turn of the year, when a short demonstration of the potential of this equipment was given by physical disability manager Lidwina Schembri Wismayer, who is an occupational therapist, together with project coordinator Graziella Camilleri, who form part of the disability services at Razzett tal-Hbiberija.

The aim of this innovative project, and the reason why the EU and local sponsors agree to fund it, is to enable those with even severe disabilities to become increasingly independent.

Through this project, the park will help level the playing field for access to employment, education and social integration when these are IT dependent.

It can create equal opportunities to allow anyone who wishes to further their skills, integrate into the work place or merely “surf” the internet.

“The project is aimed to make independent living easier and simpler. This equipment can be installed in any office, home or social setting, and its cost is not prohibitive. We aim to promote its uptake in schools, with employers, and in various localities. ICT should be accessible to anyone and everyone,” said Mr Farrugia.
