A 31-year-old man from Cospicua was jailed for six months after he pleaded guilty to theft of cash and a cheque-book.

Johan Mifsud was found guilty of stealing a bag containing cash amounting to more than Lm100 from a Toyota van in Fgura, to the detriment of Maria Dolores Bezzina.

A Magistrates’ Court presided over by magistrate Giovanni Grixti heard that Mifsud had stolen the bag from the seat of the van while the driver was unloading some goods.

Although the accused was ready to carry out voluntary work in the community, a report prepared by a probation officer showed that Mifsud still had a drug problem, so he did not qualify to serve a sentence doing voluntary work in the community.

Magistrate Grixti gave him a six-month jail term and ordered him not to molest or annoy Ms Bezzina for a year, against a Lm100 penalty.

Police inspector Malcolm Spiteri prosecuted.
