1,587 Church Weddings in 2006

The number of Church weddings registered in the Archdiocese of Malta in 2006 was 1,587.

1,411 of those marriages were between a Maltese husband and a Maltese wife. There were 85 weddings between Maltese and non-Maltese, 28 of which were between Maltese Roman Catholics and other Christian denominations while 22 weddings were between Maltese and non-Christians.

Three Maltese couples married now live abroad while 88 weddings were between foreigners.

The 85 people who were married to Maltese in 2006 were 52 men and 33 women from 34 countries. Eighteen were British, nine were Italians, six from the United States, four from China and Romania, three from Morocco, The Netherlands, Serbia and Turkey, two from Australia, Belgium, Bosnia Herzegovina, France, Germany, India and Ukraine and one from Albania, Austria, Belarus, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, the Philippines, Eire, Canada, Latvia, Libya, Nigeria, Norway, Russia, Slovenia, Sweden, Thailand and Wales.

The largest number of weddings took place in June (261), May (208) and September (176) while January saw the smallest amount (24).

Fifty-five marriages were validated, 37 widow/ers remarried while 21 people married after their first marriage was declared null. Two couples who had registered to get married in 2006 cancelled their registration.
