WasteServ Malta condemned an act of vandalism that took place yesterday on the bring-in site in Qormi. This bring-in site was set on fire early in the morning and serious damage was done to public property. This same act could have easily caused further damage to private properties close by.

WasteServ first introduced these waste recycling bins to allow and aid residents to easily separate paper, plastic, metal and glass. In order to place and maintain these bring-in sites all around Malta and Gozo over Lm591,409 were invested. This initiative was financed by the European Union and the local government, WasteServ said.

It added that the public responded enthusiastically to waste separation and the usage of these facilities during last year increased by more than 50 per cent. These figures augur well for the future of waste separation in Malta and Gozo. WasteServ Malta is committed to continue its work, so that more waste is recycled instead of being disposed of at the landfill. WasteServ will continue with its ongoing information campaign while also ensuring that legal action is taken against persons who abuse of these facilities.

The Qormi police are investigating this case.
