Six asylum seekers left for Lithuania on Tuesday following the successful conclusion of talks held between officials from the Justice and Home Affairs Ministry and the Ministry of Interior of Lithuania

The Lithuanian authorities covered all the expenses in connection with this operation making it the third European member State to support Malta in the area of asylum and irregular immigration.

This mission confirms the commitment of the Lithuanian and Maltese governments towards the promotion of administrative co-operation between member-states in the areas of migration. The Maltese government said it appreciates this gesture and hopes that other countries will offer similar help on this issue. To date, the Netherlands, Germany and the US have also taken refugees from Malta and arrangements are in hand for Ireland to receive 10 refugees in the coming days.
