Enemalta Corporation yesterday said it is fully confident “that it can meet the foreseeable electricity demand.”

The corporation was referring to remarks made in parliament by Labour MP Joe Mizzi, who suggested that “the power stations might not be able to meet demand because of faults in two turbines.”

In a statement, Enemalta Corporation said it currently has an available capacity of 440MW and this is expected to increase to 490MW within two weeks when the major overhaul on one of the gas turbines is completed as planned at the beginning of February.

The peak load last winter was 383MW and the peak load during last summer was 404MW, implying that Enemalta has over 10 per cent reserve capacity which is more than ample in the circumstances. The corporation invited the Labour MP to approach the corporation should he require more information and questions to ask.
