Restoration Work at Siggiewi old parish church site

Malta Independent Saturday, 3 February 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

The restoration division within the Resources and Infrastructure Ministry has started conservation work on the site of the old parish church of Siggiewi after an agreement was reached with the parish priest.

The old church, dedicated to St Nicholas, was built soon after Siggiewi became a parish in 1436. Today, only a few remains are left after the church was destroyed in the 17th century.

Visiting the site yesterday, minister Ninu Zammit said that the area had been completely neglected and was for a time being used for agricultural purposes.

The project includes the removal of vegetation and of soil that accumulated over the years so much so that part of the church has been buried.

This will lead to the conservation of the actual church remains, Mr Zammit said, pointing out that the work needs to be carried out manually.

Once completed, the site will be accessible to the public. Information panels will give details on the church and there will also be an exhibition of sculptures that were found on site.
