The Malta Institute of Management (MIM) last year conducted a survey entitled The European Manager. The survey, which was carried out on behalf of the European Management Association (EMA), formed part of a Europe-wide research project, involving Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and Malta.

The survey looked into the individual values and competences of managers and owner managers, the factors which influence career development decisions and aspects of the working environment in general. The overall aim of this exercise was to achieve a better understanding of cultural differences within Europe, in such a way that they can be used to develop recommendations that support the coherence and integration of European Managers, and more importantly to determine whether there is actually a shared ‘profile’ of a manager within the European management community.

For example, a consistent picture emerges of managers who worked long hours with the Maltese rating amongst the highest. The Maltese, with an average of 9.9 hours daily, are second only to German Managers who dedicate 10.7 hours daily to their work. This, however, has to be viewed in relation to the time spent commuting to and from work. In fact in the UK, Managers only spend 9.1 hours at work, but spend an average of 1.6 hours travelling to and from work. In Malta this problem is practically inexistent.

This was the first significant research carried out in partnership by member organisations of EMA. EMA is a network of management institutes and development organizations across Europe, whose aim is to exchange and promote best practice and stimulate debate on key management issues.

The MIM will be making available the results and conclusions of the said survey during a breakfast meeting which is being held at Corinthia San Gorg, St Julian’s on 16 February. The breakfast meeting will be organised for the purpose of presenting and discussing the results that have emerged from this international exercise. The survey will be analysed by Prof. Edward Zammit and discussed within a panel made up of Joe Zammit, MIM vice- president, Joe Farrugia, director general Malta Employers’ Association, Maria Pia Chircop, chief executive officer Foundation for Human Resources Development and Marcel Mizzi, vice-president (Sections) General Retailers and Traders Union – Malta Chamber of SME’s.
