More than 400 students from the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) are participating in the annual hair and beauty marathon that kicked-off yesterday morning and ends this evening after 36 hours of hard work.
The participating students, most of whom are from MCAST’s Institute of Community Services, together with their lecturers, college directors and helpers, aim to surpass the whopping Lm40,000 collected last year in aid of Ir-Razzett tal-Hbiberija.
The students are being assisted by professional hair stylists and beauty therapists, one of whom, Lara Meli, a former student of the Hair and Beauty School that was replaced by MCAST’s Institute of Community Services, told this newspaper that she has eagerly participated in the marathon over the years.
“It is a lovely opportunity to help those in need, while assisting aspiring hair stylists. I have been working with my sister at her hair salon for the past seven years and I enjoy every bit of it,” said Ms Meli.
It is evident that this is not the only one of MCAST’s annual extra-curricular activities as fourth-year student Christian Galea points out.
Mr Galea works in his father’s salon on a full-time basis while completing the apprenticeship part of the MCAST course. He explained that he looks forward to the various activities organised by the college that make the course so much more interesting.
And second-year student Ebony Zammit said she looks forward to have her own salon some day, but will have to start off by working with someone else.
Razzett helps over 1,000 individuals with disabilities, as well as a number of organisations working in the field of disability and healthcare, and the funds raised during the hair and beauty marathon will be used to sustain the valuable daily programmes.
Anyone wishing to have their hair done, or get some beauty treatment may do so at a nominal fee by visiting Ir-Razzett tal-Hbiberija by 11pm today.
The marathon is being broadcast live on Education 22 and viewers may also watch features on ONE TV and NET TV.
