The Luqa local council, run by a majority of Labour Party councillors, is spending Lm60,000 in surfacing 11 new roads in Hal Farrug, Labour leader Alfred Sant said yesterday.

Dr Sant was speaking during a visit to Luqa as part of the MLP campaign in the run-up to the local elections of 10 March.

The work carried out on the roads in Hal Farrug bears witness to the fact that Labour councillors deliver on their promises – in fact the Labour Party councillors at Luqa have completed 88 per cent of the work they promised to carry out three years ago, said Dr Sant, adding that this confirmed the Labour councillors’ commitment to improve the quality of life of citizens.

The Opposition Leader said that the Luqa local council paid specific attention to the Hal Farrug area, which the Nationalist government has always neglected.

He mentioned other projects carried out in Hal Farrug, including work on other roads, pavements and water systems, as well as work on the water culvert in Triq l-Egrett l-Isfar and Triq Wied in-Noqor.

The council also built water culverts to solve the problem that was being caused by rain water in the area, said Dr Sant.

He added that the council also embellished a dilapidated zone in Hal Farrug by transforming it into a playing field and it is also working hard and insisting with the authorities to provide public transport on a regular basis, to and from Hal Farrug. Dr Sant referred to the central government’s work carried out on an arterial road by means of money obtained under the Italian protocol. Traffic had to be deviated along secondary roads in Hal Farrug and the government has still not provided the money it had promised the council, so that it would be able to make good for any damage caused to the roads as a result of excessive traffic. Other work carried out by the Luqa local council includes a new playing field in Misrah iz-Zghazagh, which represented an investment of more than Lm13,000.

The council also carried out surfacing works on a number of roads, including Triq Sir Ugo Mifsud, part of Triq Guzeppi Ellul, Triq il-Karmnu and its lanes, as well as Triq Pawlu Magri, Triq Andrè Vassallo, Triq ir-Rixtellu and Triq Anton Falzon.
