The Qormi local council spent Lm190,000 on resurfacing 2.8 kilometres of roads over the past three years, Labour leader Alfred Sant said yesterday. This helped the local council achieve a 92 per cent rating from the MLP leader.

Giving a list of the roads where work was carried out, Dr Sant said special attention was given to making the roads and pavements accessible to disabled people.

The council has also put pressure on the central authorities to build a bridge in Sebh Street to give people living in the Blat 2 area access to the centre of the village and also insisted that speed cameras should be installed in the street.

The Labour-led council had improved the public cleansing system and embellished soft areas, gardens and roundabouts. An area in Dun Marju Street was turned into a recreational zone while the garden behind the War Monument was refurbished.

Dr Sant said the council also worked to resolve the storm water problem in Valley Road and to improve access for residents on either side each time it rained.

A commission had been set up to take note of complaints from residents of the housing estates and the outskirts of the town. The council had also made a request for public transport to service these outlying areas.

Dr Sant said a new Qormi council led by a Labour majority would continue building on past successes. It would develop a recreational area in the Blat 2 area and complete the embellishment project close to the Kappella tal-Blat. The Armier and Federico Maempel gardens would get a facelift too, Dr Sant said.
