A Nationalist-led local council in Munxar not only did not fulfil its promises but over the past weeks committed an environmental disaster at Ta’ Sanap Cliffs, Labour Party leader Alfred Sant said.

The Munxar council carried out only 55 per cent of the promises it made three years ago, he said when visiting the locality.

Dr Sant said that the concrete pathway built at Ta’ Sanap Cliffs had destroyed flora and fauna. He condemned this “illegal development” and said that mayor Joseph Sultana had decided on it on his own, so much so that the council had not taken any vote on the issue.

The Labour leader said the mayor had been supported by top PN officials including secretary general Joe Saliba, Dr Sant said. While it is important that farmers had easy access to their fields, the protection of the environment remained an absolute priority.

Dr Sant also spoke about the embellishment of the village square, a project that has been promised by the Nationalists since 2000 but which is still to be implemented.

The Nationalist-led council had also promised a recreation area for the locals, but six years after the pledge, only part of the work had been carried out.

A day care centre for children and the extension of the council’s administrative offices had also not materialised, he added.

Other work promised – this time by Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono – included the upgrading of the road leading to Xlendi, and had also not been implemented, Dr Sant said.
