The cooperation and goodwill shown by Labour Party Floriana councillors enabled the council to carry out 75 per cent of the work it had promised three years ago, Labour leader Alfred Sant said yesterday.

Visiting the town yesterday, Dr Sant said that three years ago, the MLP had obtained a relative majority in the Floriana local election. If they wanted to, Labour councillors could have played the partisan game and blocked the council’s work. Instead, they chose to work in the best interest of the locality at a time when the government was putting spokes in the council’s wheels.

Over the past term, the Floriana council had embellished the locality with work in Robert Samut Square and Hay Wharf. The bastions in Frangisku Fenech Street and Vilhena Gardens were also cleaned up.

Other work was carried out in Pope John XXIII Square and Luigi Preziosi Square, while roads falling under the council’s responsibility were resurfaced.

The Labour councillors agreed that the residential parking scheme in Floriana should be extended. While believing that haphazard parking was not ideal, they believed that the use of traffic wardens should not be seen as a means to raise money, Dr Sant said.

The Floriana council has installed a number of CCTV cameras in a bid to reduce vandalism, while it is constantly putting pressure on the Housing Authority to install lifts in apartment blocks.
