Birzebbuga’s St Peter in Chains Musical Society AD 1957 this year celebrates the 50th anniversary of its founding.

Celebrations start with a musical and vocal night at Birzebbuga parish church on Saturday. The event will be under the patronage of President Edward Fenech Adami.

Musical director Mro Vincent Bonnici will conduct the concert, which will also feature the Amadeus Chamber Choir. Choir director Mro Brian Cefai will be the tenor solo, and mezzo soprano Lucienne Cassar, soprano Michelle Cachia Castelletti and bass Albert Buttigieg will also perform as soloists.

The society will also mark the anniversary by publishing a book about the society and its role in the socio-cultural sphere of Birzebbuga and will unveil a new statue of St Peter to be erected in the village square instead of the current damaged statue which cannot be repaired. The society will also install a commemorative plaque at its premises and will stage a band march along Republic Street, Valletta.
