Work Done on 19 residential roads in Paola

Malta Independent Thursday, 8 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The government has financed reconstruction works in 19 residential roads in Paola within the last two years, and this was a clear example of the government’s commitment to urban redevelopment, Urban Development and Roads Minister Jesmond Mugliett said yesterday.

He was speaking during an on-site visit in Triq id-Durrajsa in the Schreiber area in Paola.

“The reconstruction of Triq it-Tama and Triq il-Gurbell gave a new look to this area that was left neglected for many years by the local council,” said Mr Mugliett.

He pointed out that the Malta Transport Authority had invested heavily in nine new residential roads in Paola amounting to over Lm130,000 (E302,818). These include: Triq ix-Xewk, Triq Anglu Psaila, Triq Marija Addolorata, Triq Carmelo Robinich, Triq Salvatore Imbroll, and part of Triq ic-Cimiterju and Triq Mons. Frangisku Xuereb

Another Lm55,000 (E128,155) is being spent on Triq id-Durrajsa, Triq it-Tfief and Triq San Alwigi, added Mr Mugliett.

The works should be completed within the next few weeks, leaving only five roads to be built in Paola.

The remaining roads are Triq Pietru Pace, Triq l-Ibjar, the lower part of Triq Ninu Cremona, Triq Gdida in Triq Arkata and Triq Hal Tarxien. The latter, explained Mr Mugliett, was one of the roads included in the Construction of Residential Roads Project 2006 – 2008.

“This road has to be completely rebuilt since it takes heavy traffic,” he said.

Extensive work was done to give a new look to the main roads in Paola – Lm20,000 (E46,587) was spent on Triq Ghajn Dwieli and Lm10,000 (E23,293) on the upper part of Triq Ninu Cremona.

Furthermore, said Mr Mugliett, the ADT shared the total cost with the Water Services Corporation, after the water mains were replaced, to re-do parts of Triq San Guzepp, Triq Haz-Zabbar, Triq is-Sorijiet, Triq San Gorg, and Triq Schreiber.

The government was sensitive to the needs of residents, businesses and the surrounding environment, unlike the work carried out by the Paola local council on the new pavements in Triq Valletta, in front of the Corradino Correctional Facility, he added.

The quality and design of these works was creating conflict between the residents of the area, said

Mr Mugliett.
