An art exhibition by Alfred Camilleri, consisting of recent works integrating the two-dimensional and three-dimensional aspects in a variety of media, is being held at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta under the auspices of Heritage Malta.

The works being shown until 15 May are in acrylics on canvas incorporating wood and metal, watercolours, inks, and plastic. Characteristics of Camilleri’s work are a structured composition, the use of neat chromatic combinations and elements which raise further curiosity in the viewer.

With ARTworks as the title of this exhibition, the artist is not referring solely and simply to works of art but, as he himself explains, he tries to make an art which works on the intellectual and emotional levels as much as on the visual.

Throughout a career spanning nearly 40 years, Camilleri strived not to mix up his personal artistic endeavour with what seems to be a race for exhibitionism and commerce in the field. In this way he has worked towards keeping his art away from those tendencies which may lead to superficiality of thought, ceaseless repetition, and the risk of considering the decorative value of art as a priority.
