Malta joined the Academy of European Law in a ceremony held on 18 April at the academy’s seat in the city of Trier, Germany.

The academy is a non-profit organisation that helps in the teaching of and spreads information about European legislation.

Justice and Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg and academy president Jacques Santer signed an agreement under which Malta became also a sponsor of the academy.

Maltese judges, magistrates, law professionals and civil servants will now be able to attend courses on European Law at preferential rates.

Anthony Borg Barthet and Ena Cremona, Maltese judges at the European Courts of Justice, and academy director Dr Wolfgang Heusel were also present at the signing.

The Malta Chamber of Advocates welcomed the signing, saying it would help improve legal education in Malta.
